Compliance Analyst, Enbridge

Describe a typical day

I support the ethics and compliance management team for Major Projects. We provide governance and support to achieve consistent, reliable and repeatable project execution.

A typical day, starts off with a warm cup of coffee. Monogram coffee shop just opened up in our building so my mornings just got a little bit better! I then scan through the media, predominately looking to see if Enbridge appears anywhere. Other than those consistencies, each day is pretty unique. I track, monitor and report on events, incidents, business misconduct and preventive and corrective action plans. On an as-needed basis, we review potential compliance issues and undertake investigations as necessary. Part of my role includes promoting our Ethics & Compliance Program through compliance related training, procedures, processes and policy development to help ensure project success. Currently we are representing Major Projects in enhancing our standardized commitment management process. We serve as a support function to projects and are typically asked to provide information about our procedures and assist with compliance management planning. So, what I think I'm going to be doing on a typical day can be varied and often a welcomed surprise.

Perks of your job and things you like about your current company.

I would say one of the perks of my job is the variety. I enjoy the fast pace and constant challenges my job provides. I love the team I work with; they are great mentors with an abundance of knowledge. They continuously help me learn and grow while maintaining a fun and light-hearted work environment!

The conversation around Energy today is so important and I like that Enbridge is proactively trying to educate the public with their Life Takes Energy campaign. I love the message they are communicating; life takes energy from cooking dinner to farming, from commuting home to flying across the world. I think it is important to educate the public on the different types of energy and the central role it plays in improving our quality of life and meeting our basic needs. What I also like about Enbridge is that it is continuously evolving, as is its portfolio within the energy sector.

Proudest accomplishments both in and outside of work.

My proudest accomplishment through work has been supporting Major Projects with a major regulatory audit. I was tasked to read and evaluate the audits in order to conduct a gap analysis. This gap analysis ensured we are meeting our regulatory commitments and standards. It was an invaluable experience because it is not often you get to work at such a large company in a broad scale. I enjoyed learning about and liaising with various departments within Enbridge.

Outside of work, my proudest accomplishment has to be completing my Master’s degree in Public Policy. I actually miss the learning, discussions and my classmates, but I do not miss staying up until the early hours of the morning working on assignments and my thesis!

Thoughts on the future of the industry as it relates to your field.

Ethics and compliance is an important function in any industry. As the energy industry continues to evolve, so do the regulatory requirements and standards. With increasing public scrutiny, it is crucial that companies have a robust compliance program in order to be successful.

Current community involvement efforts.

I have been volunteering with the Economic Society of Calgary for quite some time now. The society hosts events to create awareness and understanding around current economic issues. I have met some very inspiring professionals through my involvement.

I also volunteer as a coach with the Junior Champions Soccer league. I grew up playing sports and in return, it has instilled a number of great values that I still see imperative today. I think it is important to give back and help kids develop leadership and communication skills at such a young age.

Why YWE?

It brings together ambitious, intelligent and like-minded women to learn from one another and grow together. Most importantly, it inspires me to work towards my own goals!
