HR/Internal Communications Manager , XI Technologies

Describe a typical day

Hmm, I am not sure there is ever a typical day in HR?  As HR manager, I work closely with the entire company and am involved in all aspects of the business.  My day involves seeking out opportunities to improve the business, and leading initiatives to optimize performance, productivity and employee satisfaction. Human Resources is a people focused profession that helps drive the business forward, therefore my role combines the need to understand the strategic direction of our organization while also understanding the people who make it successful.  This looks different for all employees, so my focus is around continuously building relationships. Better knowing our employees means I’m more prepared to  understand  what they need to be happy, engaged and motivated.  I am always thinking of ways in which we can improve, simplify or get in front of issues.  The people, constant challenges, and changing landscape of HR are what makes my days so rewarding.

Perks of your job and things you like about your current company.

Turning 10 years this year, XI Technologies is a privately owned, fun and innovative company and I feel very fortunate to work with the people I do. They support me in learning, trying new things, and taking risks. This means my typical day is not so typical: a big part of  why I love my job!  My favorite aspect of HR has been helping to shape XI’s culture, and laying the groundwork for future growth, engagement and retention.

Proudest accomplishments both in and outside of work.

My proudest accomplishments professionally have been successfully building the foundation for new Departments at XI Technologies. Three years ago I was brought on to develop our Marketing Department, and after establishing our needs in Marketing I’ve moved on to create and maintain our HR/Communications Department. Almost 1 year leading the HR team and we are already seeing  increased success through improved processes, stronger communication and collaboration and a dynamic company culture.

Outside of work I would say my proudest accomplishments are the relationships I have built over the years, which constantly challenge me to be a better wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend. These relationships are what get me out of bed in the morning, put a smile on my face, encourage me to grow and what I cherish most!

Thoughts on the future of the industry as it relates to your field.

With hiring confidence generally up around Calgary, there seems to be a real shift in focus towards developing and supporting the right company culture, in order to increase employee retention; rather than simply focusing on salaries.  With employers focused on increased professional development, healthy work/life balance, great benefits and options, we now see more  motivated employees willing to stay the course. It’s exciting to see employees less tempted to cross the street for a few bucks more an hour.

Current community involvement efforts.

YYC Tech Gives Contributor- This is a group of Calgary based Tech Organizations committed to giving back to the city that has been so good to all of us! Our focus, among other things, involves fundraising while showcasing that the local tech community is a vibrant one, committed to making a difference in Calgary.  Partnering with the Calgary Inter-faith Food Bank and CBC, YYC Tech raised $127,000 for the Food Bank in 2013.

Events Coordinator at Kids and Company 2012-2014: As a member of the Parent Committee I get to be involved in my child’s early education, and help act as a direct link between parents and the organization.  Currently, my focus is to raise money and throw events to say thank you to incredible women who teach and care for our kids at London House- Kids and Company.

XI Technologies, Spokes for Little Folks Organizer: This annual initiative draws on the generosity of local sponsors to provide 60 deserving YYC kids with a new bike, helmet and bike safety training as a part of our commitment to building stronger communities.  XI Technologies is proud to host this event each year with our sponsorship partners and all the amazing people who donate their time and resources to help make the event special and memorable for everyone involved.

Why YWE?

A friend and inspiring business woman recently introduced me to YWE, and I was hooked!  As a working mother of 2 boys under 5, I am always looking for new ways to meet and connect with inspiring women around Calgary. As a West Coaster with just 3 years in the Energy Industry, I still feel I have a lot to learn and I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to grow and learn from the experiences of other women in energy.

What are you reading?

There is a lot of exciting change going on at XI right now, so my nightstand is pretty work focused: Our Iceberg is Melting and XLR8 by John Kotter are what is keeping me up at night right now.

…Oh and I always have a new Recipe Book on the go as well- Oh She Glows Cook Book: Vegan Recipes to Glow from the Inside Out is my current favorite.
