Madison Olyniuk

Senior Account Executive, Brookline Public Relations

Describe a typical day

As with most jobs, there is never a typical day. My client portfolio can range between five and ten different projects, each peaking at different times throughout the day. I work at a very collaborative office, where impromptu brainstorming and discussions are happening all the time. I work very closely with media contacts across Canada, so there is typically some form of dialogue. As well, at any time I can be managing social media, writing press releases or other media materials, planning a stakeholder event or handling a client crisis. While no two days are ever the same, I am constantly learning and growing as a PR practitioner, which is what I love most.

Perks of your job and things you like about your current company.

The biggest perk of my job is being able to connect with unique individuals in a variety of industries. Through public relations, I have the ability to learn about an array of businesses and create unique strategies to help my clients connect with their extremely varied audiences.  I am fortunate to work with financial institutions, oil and gas firms, real estate developers and restaurant owners to name a few. Working at a boutique agency offers me the opportunity to work with clients that both interest and challenge me and has led to both personal and professional growth.

Proudest accomplishments both in and outside of work.

I have been able to lead so many great projects and innovative campaigns during my time at Brookline. One of my most memorable projects was planning the opening for Canada’s newest and longest runway at the Calgary International Airport. Over two days, we hosted more than 7,000 citizens, 25 vendors and 300 volunteers on the new runway. To see all the planning come together and Calgarians enjoying themselves at the event was such a rewarding experience.

Outside of work I am very grateful for my ability to partake in extensive travel. It’s a passion of mine to experience new cultures, meet new people and become immersed in the entertainment and food of new surroundings. I’m lucky to be travelling to Portugal and Spain this coming summer and planning a trip to Japan next year.

Thoughts on the future of the industry as it relates to your field.

As the economy continues to fluctuate, I believe public relations and communications will continue to play a substantial role in the companies that succeed. Communications, both internally and externally, play such a vital role in how a company is perceived – is this a company I want to work with? Is this a company I trust? Is this a company that is transparent? It’s important for companies to recognize the importance of communicating with their stakeholders even in difficult times.

Current community involvement efforts.

I have volunteered with the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) for the past five years. I also organize volunteer opportunities for my team, at such non-profits as the Calgary Food Bank.

Why YWE?

This is a great organization that is bringing the brightest women in the industry together. It’s fantastic to attend events and meet with individuals from such different backgrounds, as there is a diverse range of perspectives. I am also very proud to volunteer for an organization that is speaking up and championing women’s interest and developments.

What are you reading?

Basically anything on Heather’s Picks. I love reading any sort of fiction, being able to escape into new worlds, think creatively and analyze the writing styles of different authors.
