Melissa Mathieson

Regulatory Policy Development Specialist, National Energy Board

Describe a typical day

I get into the office early and start the day with a large coffee – with the right amount of coffee I’m convinced I can take anything the day throws at me! The rest of the day consists of leading and contributing to policy projects and strategic initiatives. Typical activities include writing briefing notes and project plans, interviewing subject matter experts, consulting with external stakeholders, and providing strategic regulatory policy advice to senior management.

Perks of your job and things you like about your current company.

I help solve complex problems every day. The work is do is meaningful, fulfilling, and related to a subject matter that I am passionate about it. It also doesn’t hurt to enjoy the perks that come along with working for one of Canada’s top 100 employers!

Proudest accomplishments both in and outside of work.

Both in and outside of work, I’m proudest of doing the things that I am most afraid of failing at. This includes moving across the country right out of university to take a job in the Prime Minister’s Office, constantly taking on work projects that are just outside of my comfort zone, and running for politics at age 24 as a federal nomination candidate.

Thoughts on the future of the industry as it relates to your field.

I recognize how lucky I am to be involved in this industry at such a pivotal time. There is never a boring day. I am highly optimistic for the future after witnessing how quickly our industry has adapted to a rapidly changing external environment over the past few years.

Current community involvement efforts.

After more than a decade of being intensely involved in the political process and volunteering countless hours for candidates and campaigns I believed in, I have recently shifted my focus to volunteering with groups that represent causes I am passionate about. I’m currently involved with Equal Voice, and of course YWE!

Why YWE?

Getting involved with YWE is a great way to meet new people and expand your network. I love connecting with other women in the industry and learning from their experiences.

What are you reading?

I love to read political biographies and business books. I’m currently reading “Simply Brilliant: How Great Organizations Do Things In Extraordinary Ways” and “How Google Works”. I’m also gearing up for the next YWE book club!
